Chapter 4

1 AND the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped by the Rock of Help; and the Philistines encamped at Aphek.

2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel; and when they fought, Israel was defeated before the Philistines; and there were slain on the battlefield about four thousand men.

3 And when the people were come to the camp, the elders of Israel said, Why has the LORD smitten us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts out of Shiloh to us, that it may go with us and save us from our enemies.

4 So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who dwells upon the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of the LORD.

5 And it came to pass, when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that it reechoed.

6 And when the Philistines heard the noise, they said, What is this noise of shouting in the camp of the Hebrews? And they learned that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp.

7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.

8 Woe to us! who shall deliver us from the hands of the mighty God? This is the God who smote the whole of Egypt with all sorts of plagues and performed wonders in the wilderness.

9 Be strong, and conduct yourselves like men, O Philistines, lest you become servants to the Hebrews, as they have served you; be strong and fight with them.

10 And the Philistines fought with Israel, and Israel was defeated, and they fled every man to his tent; and there was a very great slaughter in Israel; for there fell of Israel in that day thirty thousand footmen.

11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

12 And there ran a man of Benjamin from the battle line, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent and with earth upon his head.

13 And Eli was sitting upon a seat by the wayside watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city to tell of the disaster, all the city cried out.

14 And when Eli heard the noise of crying, he said, What is this noise of tumult? And the man came in hastily and told Eli.

15 Now Eli was seventy-eight years old; and his eyes were dim so that he could not see.

16 And the man said to Eli, I am he who came from the battle line, and I fled today from the battle line. And he said to him, What is the news, my son?

17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people, and your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been taken.

18 And it came to pass, when Eli thought of the ark of God, he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck broke, and he died; for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

19 And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child; and was near to be delivered; and when she heard the news that the ark of God was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed down and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

20 And about the time of her death, the women that stood by her said to her, Fear not; for you have borne a son. But she neither answered nor did she pay attention to it.

21 And she named the child Jochabar, saying, The glory is departed from Israel; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.

5 Und da die Lade727 des Bundes1285 des HErrn3068 in das Lager4264 kam935, jauchzete das ganze Israel3478 mit einem großen1419 Jauchzen7321, daß die Erde776 erschallete.

6 Da aber die Philister6430 höreten das Geschrei6963 solches8085 Jauchzens8643, sprachen559 sie: Was ist935 das Geschrei6963 solches großen1419 Jauchzens8643 in der Ebräer Lager4264? Und da sie erfuhren3045, daß die Lade727 des HErrn3068 ins Lager4264 kommen wäre,

7 fürchteten3372 sie sich und6430 sprachen559: GOtt430 ist935 ins Lager4264 kommen; und sprachen559 weiter: Wehe188 uns! denn es ist vorhin nicht also gestanden.

8 Wehe188 uns! Wer will uns erretten5337 von der Hand3027 dieser mächtigen117 Götter430? Das sind die Götter430, die Ägypten4714 schlugen5221 mit allerlei Plage4347 in der Wüste4057.

9 So seid1961 nun getrost und Männer582, ihr5680 Philister6430, daß ihr nicht dienen5647 müsset den Ebräern, wie sie2388 euch gedienet haben5647. Seid1961 Männer582 und streitet3898!

10 Da stritten3898 die Philister6430, und Israel3478 ward geschlagen5062, und ein jeglicher floh5127 in seine Hütte168. Und es war eine sehr3966 große1419 Schlacht4347, daß aus Israel3478 fielen5307 dreißigtausend7970 Mann376 Fußvolks.

13 Und siehe, als er hineinkam, saß3427 Eli5941 auf dem Stuhl3678, daß er auf den Weg sähe6822; denn sein Herz3820 war935 zaghaft2730 über der Lade727 Gottes430. Und da der Mann376 in die Stadt5892 kam935, sagte5046 er‘s an3027; und die ganze Stadt5892 schrie2199.

14 Und da Eli5941 das laute6963 Schreien6963 hörete, fragte er: Was ist935 das für ein laut Getümmel1995? Da kam8085 der Mann376 eilend4116 und sagte559 es Eli5941 an5046.

15 (Eli aber5941 war8083 achtundneunzig Jahre8141 alt1121, und seine Augen5869 waren dunkel, daß er nicht6965 sehen7200 konnte3201.)

16 Der Mann376 aber5941 sprach559 zu4634 Eli: Ich komme935 und bin heute3117 aus dem Heer geflohen5127. Er aber sprach559: Wie gehet es1697 zu4634, mein Sohn1121?

17 Da antwortete6030 der Verkündiger1319 und6430 sprach559: Israel3478 ist8147 geflohen5127 vor6440 den Philistern, und ist eine große1419 Schlacht4046 im Volk5971 geschehen; und deine zween Söhne1121, Hophni2652 und Pinehas6372, sind gestorben4191; dazu die Lade727 Gottes430 ist genommen.

18 Da er3027 aber der Lade727 Gottes430 gedachte2142, fiel5307 er zurück322 vom Stuhl3678 am1157 Tor8179 und brach7665 seinen Hals4665 entzwei und starb4191; denn er war alt2204 und ein schwerer3513 Mann376. Er richtete8199 aber Israel3478 vierzig705 Jahre8141.

19 Seine Schnur aber3618, Pinehas6372 Weib802, war4191 schwanger2030 und sollte schier geliegen. Da sie3947 das Gerücht8052 hörete, daß die Lade727 Gottes430 genommen und ihr3205 Schwäher und Mann376 tot wäre, krümmete sie sich3766 und gebar3205, denn es kam8085 sie ihr Wehe6735 an413.

20 Und da6256 sie7896 jetzt starb4191, sprachen1696 die Weiber, die neben ihr3205 stunden: Fürchte3372 dich nicht, du hast5324 einen jungen Sohn1121. Aber sie antwortete6030 nichts und nahm‘s auch nicht zu Herzen3820.

21 Und sie hieß7121 den Knaben5288 Ikabod350 und sprach559: Die Herrlichkeit3519 ist3947 dahin von413 Israel3478; weil die Lade727 Gottes430 genommen war1540 und ihr Schwäher und ihr Mann376.
